August 9, 2009 Meeting

This past gun ticket raffle brought in over $18,000 in gross sales. This means we sold over 900 of the 1000 available tickets, making this our best gun ticket sale ever. We won't know our profits till the end of August.

John Long hosted Chuck Rhoads from ABC 27 on his boat for a fishing trip. The story aired this past Thursday, and is available to view on the internet (a link is on the message board).

The majority of the meeting was spent going over all aspects of the Open Tournament, making sure all details were covered. Refreshments (hot dogs & kraut, drinks) will be available during the 6 - 9 pm signup. Door prizes, prize table tickets, 50/50 tickets will be available. Anybody who can help set up on Friday at Arnolds Marine is welcome. Also, they will need help to clean up on Sunday.

July 12, 2009 Meeting

Board again discussed Open Tournament. Arnolds Marine will sponsor Beef and Pork sandwiches from Frederick Meats for tournament participants. PSBA will provide side dishes. Arnold's is also sponsoring a live band to perform after weigh ins for a couple hours.

John Long will have Chuck Rhoads from ABC 27 on his boat some time between July 27-30 to film a story about the PSBA. This will be an installment of his "Out and About" series, and will highlight the PSBA's stocking program and tournament trail. The Open tournament will be promoted.

Rick McVicker spoke with biologists from Juniata College at recent Friends of Raystown meeting. They are very interested in coming to the next fish stocking, which should be soon. Also, the Army Corps has approved the PSBA to borrow the barge for this upcoming stocking. We hope to back a trailer full of fish directly onto the barge and float stock in various locations where alewife populations are known to be good.

At regular meeting, Norm Montoy volunteered to try to get 10 canoes for next year's Big Brothers / Sisters event. He plans to teach the kids how to boat safely in a canoe. We expect the kids will really enjoy this activity.

June 14, 2009 Meeting

Board reviewed and updated the rules for the Open Tournament coming up in August. New rules sheet can be viewed on main web site under Tournament Info. Board also worked out details for sign ups, door prizes, raffle prizes, etc.

Arnold's Marine wants to provide a picnic style meal for tournament participants, details still being worked out. Also, Arnold's is sponsoring a "Wildcard" prize for the Open. This will be worth $250 for the team who has a fish closest in weight to a randomly determined Wildcard weight. Full details will be provided at the captains meeting.

May 17, 2009 Meeting

April 25 fish stocking was fantastic. We got a great deal on larger fish left from last year's hatch. Although deals like this will not be available every year, board voted for efforts to be made to seek out similar springtime stockings with larger fish in the future.

The PSBA has had some discussions with Dr. Chuck Yohn from Juniata College recently. We are exploring the possibility of a joint effort between us and them that would benefit both. We are interested in enhancing the Striped Bass stocking effort on Raystown Lake, they are interested in research projects for college students. Some possibilities of joint cooperation are ...

  • collecting mature stripers from Raystown Lake and manually spawning them to produce viable fry for release into the lake.
  • a study of the Striper population at Raystown
  • a study of Alewife life cycle at Raystown, and its impact as a food source for stocked Striper fingerlings

A tentative meeting is to take place some time in July between PSBA officers and Juniata faculty members. At that time we will discuss how feasible some of the above mentioned ideas are.

The donated pontoon boat for float stocking was stripped down by Don Layton and his stepson Matt Lack. Denny Roth also pitched in. Now we are ready to install tanks on top.

April 19, 2009 Meeting

Board voted to take all striper fingerlings left from our grower's pond from last year's hatch at a nice discount. These fish are now 6-8 inches long, and he estimates there are 5 to 10 thousand. Total expenditure should be $2500 - $5000. We are going to try to stock them in Beer Barrel Bay, due to anticipated alewife spawns there. Delivery should be in about a week.

Board voted to split Youth Angler into 2 age groups - 9 and under, and ages 10-15. This was made possible from Al Zipf donating funds for 2 youth jackets. It is hoped that this move will encourage more youth to fish tournaments.

Lake Cleanup Day on April 18 was a huge success, with approx 25 people representing the PSBA in attendance. A great deal of garbage was cleaned from the lake and shorelines.

Board discussed issue of fish condition at weigh-ins. After feedback from the March 28 Tourney, some research was done on this subject. Board decided to print an information handout and give each team a copy at tournaments. Basically, we want to see clear eyes and red gills. Red body discolorations are caused by direct contact with ice, and will not prevent a fish from being weighed in. We are recommending people wrap their fish in a large trash bag first, then place loose bag ice around it in the cooler. The bag prevents gills from getting washed out with cooler water, and helps minimize red discolorations.

March 8, 2009 Meeting

Bob Henderson got 2 Penn 209 LC reels & 5 rods with his discount. We will keep an eye out for 3 more reels to go with the extra rods. These will be used as prizes for Big Fish Ladder. Bob will also get some other useful items that people would like as prizes.

Mike Stoeffler from Arnold's Marine was formally voted onto the board, filling the spot held by Ed Morningstar. Thanks to Ed for his time on the board, and thanks to Mike for stepping up.

Board voted for Denny to buy more Panther Martin U-Rigs for use as prizes.

Mike said that one of his customers is donating a damaged 20' pontoon boat to the PSBA (no trailer or motor). We need to strip it down so that it can be converted into a float stocking platform to stock striper fingerlings. Mike also volunteered to keep it at Arnold's Marine for the club.

Jeff Green will re-direct our web site traffic to the new web site (this one).

Board discussed rules for upcoming One Day Tournaments. It was decided to change weigh-in time to 6pm for spring tourney, and 5 pm for the fall tourneys. This change will give ample time to fish, yet provide enough daylight for people to get their boats cleaned up afterwards. (see rule sheet on this site)

A Striper Seminar was held during regular meeting, with many in attendance. Denny and George Busek conducted seminar inside, then most went outside for cast net demonstrations. A handful of new memberships were taken.

Feb 8, 2009 Meeting

Board adopted stocking protocol based on scientific research studies (fingerlings need alewife fry for best survival). A stocking committee was formed to locate key areas on the lake where alewife populations have spawned and would make good stocking locations. The committee will coordinate all stocking efforts - from negotiating with the grower, thru assisting with the stocking process. Stocking committee will be the following people.

  1. Denny Roth
  2. Bob Henderson
  3. Bobby Kauffman
  4. Mike Hoover
  5. Ron Foreman
  6. Pap Asper
  7. Mark Sipes

Board voted for Bob Henderson to purchase two Penn 209 line counter reels and two 7' MH rods (at 30% off with his card) to be used as prizes for Big Fish Ladder. It was discussed that the prizes for the Big Fish Ladder need to be better, or we may start losing people from signing up for it.

January Gun ticket made approx $8500 profit for the club. The banquet brought in a little over $3000 in profit. It looks like our fish budget for 2009 will be $23,000 to $24,000.

Four "Team of Year" jackets ($320) were donated for 2009 by Rick McVicker. Guidelines will be as follows: 2 jackets automatically given to winning team. 3rd and 4th jackets to be given out if those anglers fished at least 4 tournaments. If the club doesn't need to use all of the money for jackets, the balance is to go into the fish fund.

Board voted for Denny to purchase a laser printer to do newsletter with, in hopes of bringing the cost down for printing each newsletter. A laser printer can be purchased for a few hundred dollars, and would pay for itself in less than a year.

Board voted to switch to new PSBA web site that is being developed, on a trial basis. New site will have more features, and will allow several administrators to share the work load. Cost will be $100 per year.

Jan 11, 2009 Meeting

Board voted to allow youth anglers (15 & under) who are not club members to fish as many tournaments as they want to without having to join the club after the first two. This would benefit those youth who fish with a grandparent, uncle, etc. Tournament entry fees would still have to be paid. Youth angler points would be awarded for each tournament they fish.
